Born Ascanio Caracciolo on October 13, 1563, in Villa Santa Maria (Abruzzo, Italy), he came from a noble family. At the age of 22, he suffered a serious illness, which led him to vow that he would dedicate his life to God if he recovered. Once restored to health, he moved to Naples, studied theology, and was ordained a priest in 1587. In 1588, after receiving—by mistake—a letter intended for another priest who shared his name, he joined forces with Juan Agustín Adorno and Fabrizio Caracciolo to found the Order of Clerics Regular Minor (known as the Caracciolines). Upon taking his solemn vows, he adopted the name Francis. In addition to the three traditional vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, the Order included a distinctive fourth vow: a renunciation of seeking or accepting ecclesiastical dignities or offices.
Elected Superior General of the Order in 1591, he fostered the expansion of the institute and introduced the practice of perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. He made several trips to Spain (to Madrid and Valladolid) to establish new houses for the congregation. He passed away on June 4, 1608, at the age of 44, in Agnone (Isernia). He was beatified by Clement XIV in 1769 and canonized by Pius VII on May 24, 1807. His feast day is celebrated on June 4.
The saint is attired in the habit proper to the Clerics Regular Minor, along with the three-cornered ecclesiastical cap (biretta) common in the modern era. The sobriety of the habit reflects the order’s vow of austerity and its active, clerical character. The book serves as his primary foundational attribute. As a co-founder of the congregation—alongside Juan Agustín Adorno and Fabrizio Caracciolo—the explicit presence of the order’s legal and spiritual rules identifies him as the legislator and guide of the Caracciolinos.
