Louis II de Bourbon, fourth Prince of Condé, was a distinguished French military commander and the First Prince of the Blood Royal during the reigns of Louis XIII and Louis XIV. Known in his youth as the Duke of Enghien, he received a thorough Jesuit education before embarking on a military career. In 1641, he married Claire-Clémence de Maillé-Brézé, a niece of Cardinal Richelieu. He achieved military renown at the age of 21 by commanding French forces at the Battle of Rocroi (1643), where his victory over the Spanish *tercios* cemented his reputation as a brilliant strategist. Following his father’s death in 1646, he inherited the title of Prince of Condé and went on to secure a series of military triumphs at Freiburg, Nördlingen, Lens, and Dunkirk. During the uprisings known as the Fronde of the Princes (1650–1653), he vehemently opposed Cardinal Mazarin and the Regent, Anne of Austria. After being imprisoned and subsequently released, he formed an alliance with the Spanish Crown, serving as a general for Philip IV against France. With the signing of the Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659), he received a pardon from Louis XIV, had his estates restored, and returned to the service of the French Crown, participating in later campaigns—such as the invasions of Franche-Comté and Flanders. In his final years, he retired to his château at Chantilly, where he acted as a patron to prominent writers and artists, including Molière, Racine, and Boileau.
