Pierre Bertrand dirigía la prestigiosa editorial francesa À la Pomme d'Or en la Rue Saint-Jacques de París. La familia Larmessin, dedicada a la impresión, trabajaba en estrecha colaboración con Bertrand (Nicolas I de Larmessin se casó con la hija de Pierre Bertrand en 1654).
Pierre Bertrand ran the prominent French publishing house À la Pomme d'Or on Rue Saint-Jacques in Paris. The Larmessin family of printmakers worked in close association with Bertrand (Nicolas I de Larmessin married Pierre Bertrand's daughter in 1654).

Hijo del librero Nicolas I de Larmessin y hermano de Nicolas III (o Nicolas el Joven). Se formó como grabador a mediados del siglo XVII.
En 1654 se casó con la hija del importante editor de estampas Pierre Bertrand. Esta unión consolidó su vínculo profesional con el taller À la Pomme d'Or en la Rue Saint-Jacques de París, lugar desde donde se editaron cientos de retratos de la realeza europea.
Junto a Pierre Bertrand, ejecutó y comercializó extensas series de retratos ovales de reyes, príncipes y dignatarios de la época (entre ellos, la serie a la que pertenece el grabado de Don Juan José de Austria)
Son of the bookseller Nicolas I de Larmessin and brother of Nicolas III (or Nicolas the Younger), he trained as an engraver in the mid-17th century.
In 1654, he married the daughter of the prominent print publisher Pierre Bertrand. This union solidified his professional connection with the workshop À la Pomme d'Or on Rue Saint-Jacques in Paris, from where hundreds of portraits of European royalty were printed.
Together with Pierre Bertrand, he executed and sold extensive series of oval portraits of kings, princes, and dignitaries of the period (including the series to which the engraving of Don Juan José of Austria belongs).

Procedimiento Principal: Grabado a buril (talla dulce / intaglio). La imagen está ejecutada mediante el grabado directo sobre plancha de cobre usando un buril, lo que permite lograr trazos limpios, precisos y graduaciones tonales profundas.
Técnica Complementaria: Posible uso de aguafuerte (eau-forte) para el mordido previo de las líneas principales y fondos, repasado posteriormente a buril para definir volúmenes y detalles finos.
Main Technique: Engraving (intaglio). The image is created by direct engraving onto a copper plate using a burin, allowing for clean, precise lines and deep tonal gradations.
Complementary Technique: Possible use of etching (eau-forte) for the initial etching of the main lines and background, followed by a burin to define volumes and fine details.
