FRANCISCO DE VARGAS Y MEJIA ( 1500 - 1566 )
Francisco de Vargas y Mejía fue un jurista y diplomático Español miembro del consejo real de Castilla y de la real hacienda, en 1552 es nombrado embajador de Carlos V ante la República de Venecia y en 1559 embajador ante la Corte Imperial de Viena puesto que ostentará hasta 1563 cuando decide retirarse al Monasterio de Santa Maria de Sisla donde fallecerá en 1566.
Francisco de Vargas y Mejía was a Spanish jurist and diplomat. member of The Royal Council of Castile and the Royal Tresaury, in 1552 he was appointed ambassador of Charles V to the Republic of Venice and in 1559 ambassador to the Imperial Court of Vienna, a position he held until 1563 when he decided yo retire to The Monastery of Santa Maria de Sisla, where he died in 1566.

Se le muestra de tres cuartos de cuerpo, con una boina y una suntuosa capa forrada de piel con ribetes horizontales decorativos. Lleva una cadena de oro cruzada sobre el pecho y sostiene una pequeña estatua o moneda/medallón en la mano derecha, lo que refleja su papel como anticuario y coleccionista. (Nota: Como era habitual en las reproducciones de grabados de la época, la composición está invertida con respecto a la pintura al óleo original de Tiziano que se conserva en el Kunsthistorisches Museum de Viena).
He is shown in three-quarter view, wearing a beret and a sumptuous fur-lined cloak with decorative horizontal piping. He wears a gold chain across his chest and holds a small statue or coin/medallion in his right hand, reflecting his role as an antiquarian and collector. (Note: As was common in reproductions of engravings from this period, the composition is reversed compared to Titian's original oil painting in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.)
