JOSEPH PORTER
Joseph Porter (fallecido en 1749) fue un acaudalado comerciante londinense vinculado a Mortlake. Era el padrastro de Lucy Porter (hijastra del Dr. Samuel Johnson). El retrato al óleo original de Porter padre, pintado por Hogarth, gozaba de gran prestigio en los círculos de la época, y obras como la Historia y Antigüedades del Condado de Leicester de John Nichols lo calificaban como «el mejor retrato realizado por aquel excelente artista».
Joseph Porter (d.1749) was a wealthy London merchant associated with Mortlake. He was the stepfather of Lucy Porter (the stepdaughter of Dr. Samuel Johnson). Hogarth's original oil painting of Porter senior was highly regarded in contemporary circles, with period accounts (such as John Nichols's History and Antiquities of the County of Leicester) calling it "esteemed to be the best portrait produced by that excellent Artist."

The portrait portrays Porter as a substantial, prosperous bourgeois figure of the early-to-mid 18th century, seated at a desk while folding or holding a letter next to an inkwell and quill. The background opens up through an arched window to reveal a coastal or riverine view with two ships, a standard iconographic nod to his mercantile and shipping endeavors. Cook utilizes dense, clean cross-hatching to translate Hogarth's painterly chiaroscuro—particularly across the deep folds of the background drapery and the texture of the coat—into a crisp, commercial graphic style typical of British publishing at the turn of the 19th century.
