MARIA MAGDALENA FUGGER. Grabado del Siglo XVII

MARIA MAGDALENA FUGGER  ( 1566 - 1646 )

Maria Magdalena Fugger was the daughter of Christoph Fugger, a member of one of the prominent branches of this influential dynasty of German bankers, merchants, and patrons of the arts. She was married to Hieronymus Fugger—a union between different branches of the family itself, intended to consolidate their wealth and social standing.

She lived during the height of the Baroque era in the Holy Roman Empire. Her visual depiction in an engraving by Wolfgang Kilian is part of the vast propaganda and commemorative effort through which the Fuggers sought to immortalize their family's grandeur, lineage, and political and economic power across generations.

Large in size and featuring a rigid geometric structure supported by wire (a *freise*), this type of collar was the pinnacle of aristocratic fashion. Its technical complexity and the use of costly lace served as a clear indicator of high social status, distinction, and wealth. The dress is lavishly decorated with symmetrical plant and floral motifs. In the engravings, the density and cross-hatching of the lines mimicked the opulence of actual fabrics (such as silk, velvet, or silver and gold thread), demonstrating the economic power of the Fugger family. In the iconography of Renaissance and Baroque female portraits, holding a piece of fruit—often an apple—was typically associated with fertility, marital virtue, or offspring, alluding to the subject's role as a wife and a continuator of the family lineage. Held gently in the right hand at the waist, the long cord of beads or precious metal reinforces the concepts of decorum, piety, and the restrained ostentation characteristic of a merchant elite that had ascended to the rank of imperial nobility.
