HERMAN MYLIUS ( 1603 - 1657 )

The figure is depicted in a half-length view, turned slightly toward the viewer's right; this breaks the rigidity of a strictly frontal pose, lending the portrait greater dynamism and psychological presence.
He wears dark attire typical of high-ranking administrators or magistrates of the mid-17th century. Standing out sharply are the plain white collar with falling lapels—a style very much in vogue during the middle decades of the century—and the decorative cord or pendant with tassels draping across his chest, signifying his distinguished rank.
His hair is long and wavy, cascading generously over his shoulders in keeping with the aristocratic aesthetic of the era. He also sports a mustache and a small goatee, rendered with precision through the linear technique of the intaglio print.
