CHARLES EISEN
Gravado del Siglo XVIII
CHARLES EISEN ( 1720 - 1778 )

Portrait in an Oval Medallion:
Inscribed within a molded oval frame. This "frame within a frame" technique creates a three-quarter depth illusion (trompe-l'œil).
Stone Base or Pedestal:
Occupies the lower part of the composition and serves as an architectural base to support the epistolary cartouche, conveying a sense of permanence and intellectual prestige typical of Enlightenment commemorative portraits.
Gesture and Expression:
Eisen is shown smiling, looking directly at the viewer to convey approachability, wit, and intelligence. He leans on a desk or table with his right arm, holding a pencil holder or stylus ready for drawing.
Attire:
He wears the typical household or studio clothing of the 18th-century upper bourgeoisie: a loose-fitting dressing gown or robe de chambre of lustrous fabric, a waistcoat, a lace jabot, and finely crafted cuffs, combining the informality of creative work with social status.
Attributes of Fine Arts (Symbolic Still Life):
On the pedestal shelf, breaking the plane of the oval frame to emphasize the three-dimensional dynamism, are arranged the essential tools of art:

With dabs of oil paint modeled in relief, an explicit symbol of painting and the creation of color.
Painter's Rest:
The stick used by painters to rest their hand without touching the fresh canvas, indicating technical precision.

Inscripciones Incisas:

Lattice and Modeling (Cross-hatching):
The dark background of the medallion and the architectural texture are achieved through networks of fine, intersecting lines with extreme density and metric regularity.
Miniaturist Virtuosity:
