Consilia D. Lvdovici de Ponteroma this is a magnificent 16th-century portal with a two-color print (rubrication) surrounded by an intricate architectural border of Mannerist woodcut.
ICONOGRAFÍA / ICONOGRAPHY :
Registro superior: Valor militar y autoridad cívica
Nicho izquierdo: Iustitia (Justicia)

Top Register: Military Valour & Civic Authority
Roman Soldiers / Warriors: At the top left and right corners stand two armored figures in classical Roman military garb.
They symbolize Fortitudo (Fortitude/Courage) and the protective power of the law in maintaining civil order and state authority.
Their posture framing the arch accents the role of jurisprudence in defending peace and justice within the Holy Roman Empire.
Putti & Mask Motif: In the top center, two winged putti support a central grotesque mask (mascaron). Masks in Mannerist art often signify the unveiling of truth or the exposure of deceit, fitting for a work on legal counsel (Consilia).
Left Niche: Iustitia (Justice)
Attributes: She holds a set of balance scales in her right hand (weighing evidence fairly) and a sword in her left (enforcing the law).
Role: Placed on the left as the fundamental pillar of legal resolution and equity.
Right Niche: Prudentia / Sapientia (Prudence / Wisdom)
Attributes: She holds a book in her arm (representing study, legal precedent, and doctrine) while looking into a mirror encircled by a serpent (or carrying the serpent of prudence, reflecting self-knowledge and discernment).
Role: Balances Iustitia; legal enforcement without prudence is tyranny, while legal wisdom guides fair judgment.
Bottom Register: Printer's Mark & Framing Elements
Central Cartouche (Sigmund Feyerabend's Device):
Fame / Fama: The central oval contains a seated female figure, often representing Fama (Fame/Renown) holding a trumpet or laurel wreath, symbolizing the wide distribution and enduring reputation of the publisher's works.
Inscription: Surrounded by the text SIGMVND FEIRABENDT.
Flanking Putti: Two seated cherubs support the central medallion, binding the publisher's identity directly into the artistic framework of the book.
. Overall Decorative Context (Mannerist Grotesques & Strapwork)
Strapwork Architecture (Beschlagwerk): The framing consists of interlocked, leather-like ribbon bands, scrollwork, and cut-out shapes characteristic of northern European Mannerism (popularized by artists like Jost Amman and Virgil Solis in Frankfurt).
Festoons & Fruit Garlands: Bunches of hanging fruit and foliage suspended throughout the border symbolize abundance, intellectual fertility, and prosperity—suggesting that reading this volume yields rich intellectual fruit for scholars and legal practitioners.

FECHA DE ESTAMPACIÓN / STAMPING DATA:
Francofurti (Frankfurt am Main). M.D.LXXVII. ( 1577 ).

The printmaking technique employed in this title page is relief printing, specifically combining woodcut and movable metal type with rubrication (two-color printing).
Technical Breakdown
Primary Medium: Woodcut (Holzschnitt) for the decorative architectural frame, combined with letterpress for the text.
Matrix Material: Pearwood or another dense fruitwood block was carved in relief. The artist (Jost Amman) drew the design directly onto the wooden block, and a specialized cutter (Formschneider) carved away the white, negative spaces, leaving the raised lines to receive the ink.
Typography: The central text is set using movable lead type (letterpress), placed within the hollowed-out center (aperture) of the woodcut border frame.
Inking & Press Execution
Two-Color Printing (Rubrication): The title features both black and vermilion red inks.
Two Pass Technique: To achieve the distinct red highlights (such as CONSILIA, D. L V D O V I C I DE PONTE ROMANI, NVPERRIME STVDIO..., and FRANCOFVRTI), the page underwent two separate press runs:
The black elements (the woodcut frame and black metal type) were inked and printed first.
The red type was inked with cinnabar/vermilion-based ink and precisely registered to print over the designated areas on the second pass.
PERIODO / PERIOD :
Renacimiento-manierismo / Renaissance Mannerism
MATERIAL:
