He wears an ecclesiastical cassock with a traditional rebaptismal cap. In his right hand, he holds a quill pen over a sheet of paper on which, in reverse (read from the viewer's perspective), is the inscription relating to his principal work: Histoire universelle de l'Église catholique (Universal History of the Catholic Church).

Central allegorical vignette with an open bookbinding, chalice, cross, inkwell with quills, roses, and a breviary, flanked by the dates and places of his birth and death.
