Enrique IV de Francia fue el primer monarca de francia de la casa de Borbón, una rama de la dinastia de los capetos, fue asesinado en 1610 y le sucedió su hijo Luis XIII.
Henry IV of France was the first monarch of France from the House of Bourbon, a branch of the Capetian dynasty. He was assassinated in 1610 and succeeded by his son Louis XIII.

Gorguera (Fraise):
Enrique IV aparece luciendo una gorguera densa y plisada de varias capas (fraise), un accesorio característico de la moda real y aristocrática francesa de finales del siglo XVI. Esta gorguera realza la cabeza, enfatizando la nobleza, la postura y la dignidad formal.
Orden del Espíritu Santo:
Colgando de una ancha cinta que cruza su pecho, se encuentra la cruz de la Orden del Espíritu Santo, la más alta orden de caballería francesa, fundada por Enrique III en 1578. El motivo central —una paloma descendente que representa al Espíritu Santo— simboliza el derecho divino, la legitimidad católica y la autoridad real.
Cartucho con corona de laurel:
El cartucho que contiene el texto «Henri le Grand» está enmarcado por ramas de laurel cruzadas. Tradicionalmente asociadas con la victoria, la paz y la fama eterna, las coronas de laurel honran el papel de Enrique IV en el fin de las Guerras de Religión francesas y el restablecimiento de la estabilidad.
El rey se presenta tras un parapeto de piedra, una convención de encuadre originaria del retrato renacentista. Establece una distancia física y formal entre el espectador y el soberano, a la vez que sirve de base estructural para el cartucho decorativo y la inscripción poética.
Drapeado:
El pesado manto que cubre sus hombros refuerza la solemnidad y el estatus regio del sujeto, suavizando la rígida geometría del jubón que lleva debajo.

Henry IV is depicted wearing a dense, multi-tiered pleated ruff (fraise), a signature accessory of late 16th-century royal and aristocratic French fashion. It elevates the head, emphasizing nobility, posture, and formal dignity.
Order of the Saint-Esprit (Order of the Holy Spirit):
Suspended from a broad ribbon across his chest is the cross of the Order of the Saint-Esprit, France's highest order of chivalry founded by Henry III in 1578. The central motif—a descending dove representing the Holy Spirit—symbolizes divine right, Catholic legitimacy, and royal authority.
Laurel Wreath Cartouche:
The cartouche containing the text Henri le Grand is framed by crossed laurel branches. Traditionally associated with victory, peace, and eternal fame, the laurels honor Henry IV’s role in ending the French Wars of Religion and restoring stability.
Balustrade & Architectural Framing:
The king is presented behind a stone parapet, a framing convention originating in Renaissance portraiture. It establishes a physical and formal distance between the viewer and the sovereign while serving as a structural base for the decorative cartouche and poetic inscription.
Drapery:
The heavy mantle draped over his shoulders reinforces the gravitas and regal status of the subject, softening the rigid geometry of the doublet beneath.
