El retrato muestra a Enrique IV de perfil, mirando tres cuartos hacia la derecha, enmarcado en un marco ovalado de piedra de estilo clasicista que descansa sobre un pedestal con motivos de ladrillo. Se le representa vistiendo su característico chaperón (capucha), con una larga corneta sobre el hombro, un broche enjoyado y un grueso collar o cadena con un medallón.
Linaje visual:
La composición deriva directamente de un grabado anterior de George Vertue, realizado para las ediciones inglesas profusamente ilustradas de la Historia de Inglaterra de Paul de Rapin-Thoyras (publicada por primera vez entre 1720 y 1730). Vertue basó su retrato en retratos reales históricos (como el singular arquetipo del retrato sobre tabla del siglo XVI que se conserva en la National Portrait Gallery de Londres).
The portrait depicts Henry IV facing three-quarters to the right, housed within a classicizing oval stone frame resting on a brick-patterned pedestal. He is shown wearing his characteristic chaperon (hood) with a long cornette draped over his shoulder, a jeweled brooch, and a heavy collar or chain with a medallion.
Visual Lineage:
The composition is directly derived from George Vertue’s earlier engraving produced for the heavily illustrated English editions of Paul de Rapin-Thoyras’s History of England (first published in the 1720s–1730s). Vertue based his likeness on historical royal portraits (such as the distinct 16th-century panel portrait archetype held in the National Portrait Gallery, London).
