ICONOGRAFÍA / ICONOGRAPHY:
Hogarth creó esta imagen alrededor de 1730 (supuestamente basada en una persona real, un encajero llamado Tibson, obsesionado fanáticamente con la política). La imagen satiriza la miopía y la obsesión de los fanáticos políticos del siglo XVIII.
El sujeto: Un anciano, absorto en un periódico (el Gazetteer o una publicación política similar de la época), lo acerca peligrosamente a la llama de una vela para leer.
La sátira: Su obsesión con los asuntos mundiales y las noticias políticas lo ciega literalmente ante su entorno inmediato. Está tan concentrado en la "ilustración" de la prensa que su sombrero se incendia con el humo y la llama de la vela, una metáfora visual clásica de Hogarth sobre los peligros de la ceguera ideológica.

Hogarth originally created this image around 1730 (allegedly based on a real person, a lace-man named Tibson who was fanatically obsessed with politics). The image satirizes the short-sighted, singular focus of amateur political zealots of the 18th century.
The Subject: An elderly man sits entirely absorbed in a newspaper (the Gazetteer or similar political sheet of the era), bringing it dangerously close to a candle flame to read.
The Satire: His obsession with global affairs and political news literally blinds him to his immediate physical surroundings. He is so focused on the "enlightenment" of the press that his hat is catching fire from the candle's smoke and flame—a classic Hogarthian visual metaphor for the hazards of ideological blindness.
Key Attributes: Note the single eyeglasses (monocle/quizzing glass) resting on his brow, the pipe smoke mingling with the burning hat brim, and the second, unlit candlestick on the table, indicating he has been reading deep into the night.
