Este grabado dieciochesco reproduce una composición del célebre pintor barroco holandés Godfried Schalcken (1643–1706), maestro indiscutible de las escenas nocturnas y de género iluminadas por la luz de las velas (kaarslicht).
La estampa forma parte de un ambicioso proyecto editorial de finales del siglo XVIII: la célebre «Galerie des Peintres Flamands, Hollandais et Allemands» (comúnmente conocida como el Cabinet de Monsieur Le Brun), publicada en París a partir de 1792 por el influyente marchante de arte, coleccionista y crítico Jean-Baptiste-Pierre Le Brun (1748–1813), esposo de la famosa pintora Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun.
La estampa captura fielmente el estilo fine-painting (fijnschilders) de la escuela de Leiden. Presenta una de las temáticas más queridas por Schalcken: la infancia y las travesuras cotidianas bajo un marcado claroscuro de influencia caravaggista. Un niño con gorro de terciopelo revuelve o toma comida ávidamente de una marmita caliente que humea sobre la mesa, mientras otra figura infantil (una niña o un hermano pequeño) emerge desde la penumbra del fondo, observándolo con complicidad o ademán de delatarlo.
La luz, que parece emanar directamente de una fuente baja y oculta tras el propio recipiente, modela de manera dramática los rostros, el vapor y los ricos pliegues de los ropajes, un sutil desafío técnico que los grabadores franceses de la época lograron traducir magistralmente al blanco y negro mediante un intrincado juego de tallas cruzadas y líneas de buril.

This 18th-century engraving reproduces a composition by the renowned Dutch Baroque painter Godfried Schalcken (1643–1706), the undisputed master of candlelit (kaarslicht) night scenes and genre paintings.
The print forms part of an ambitious publishing project from the late 18th century: the celebrated ‘Galerie des Peintres Flamands, Hollandais et Allemands’ (commonly known as the Cabinet de Monsieur Le Brun), published in Paris from 1792 onwards by the influential art dealer, collector and critic Jean-Baptiste-Pierre Le Brun (1748–1813), husband of the famous painter Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun.
The painting faithfully captures the fine-painting (fijnschilders) style of the Leiden school. It depicts one of Schalcken’s favourite themes: childhood and everyday mischief, rendered in a striking chiaroscuro influenced by Caravaggio. A boy in a velvet cap stirs or eagerly eats from a steaming hot pot on the table, whilst another child (a girl or a younger brother) emerges from the shadows in the background, watching him with a knowing look or as if about to give him away.
The light, which seems to emanate directly from a low source concealed behind the vessel itself, dramatically illuminates the faces, the steam and the rich folds of the garments—a subtle technical challenge that the French engravers of the time managed to render masterfully in black and white through an intricate interplay of cross-hatching and burin lines.
