La estampa representa al trágico general bizantino Belisario, quien, según la leyenda popular (popularizada por la novela de Marmontel de la Ilustración), fue cegado por el emperador Justiniano por celos y reducido a la indigencia.
Las figuras:
El anciano general ciego aparece con una larga barba y vestimenta clásica, sosteniendo un bastón. Un joven lo guía (alegoría de la juventud, la inocencia o la fidelidad que guían la grandeza caída).
El escenario y los símbolos:
La columna rota:
Un monumento clasicista envuelto en una guirnalda marchita o una serpiente, que simboliza la gloria perdida, la ruina política y la fragilidad del poder terrenal.
La palmera:
Alzándose tras las figuras, la palmera simboliza tradicionalmente la resiliencia, la virtud y la victoria moral sobre la adversidad, un tema central del texto de Marmontel, que abogaba por la tolerancia religiosa y la justicia política.

The print depicts the tragic Byzantine general Belisarius, who, according to popular historical legend (popularized by Marmontel's Enlightenment-era novel), was blinded by the Emperor Justinian out of jealousy and reduced to a homeless beggar.
The Figures:
