Este grabado histórico ilustra el sombrío y meticuloso proceso de una ejecución pública tradicional en varias etapas, específicamente el castigo inglés por alta traición: ser ahorcado, descuartizado y desmembrado.

Early modern prints like this were often used in pamphlets to report on the executions of high-profile political traitors or religious dissidents during the 16th and 17th centuries.

1. La horca (Derecha)
A la derecha, se muestra a un grupo de condenados colgados de una pesada horca de madera. En las ejecuciones por traición, los prisioneros solían ser ahorcados, pero se les descolgaba mientras aún estaban vivos y conscientes para que experimentaran las etapas posteriores del castigo.
2. El destripamiento (Centro)
En el centro, un hombre está atado a una escalera o banco. Un verdugo, con casco y jubón típicos de los soldados de los siglos XVI o XVII, se sitúa sobre él. Esta etapa consistía en castrar y destripar al prisionero mientras aún estaba vivo.
3. La quema de vísceras (Izquierda)
En el extremo izquierdo, arde una gran hoguera. Un ayudante usa una vara larga para sostener un objeto —a menudo el corazón o las vísceras del prisionero— antes de arrojarlo a las llamas. La etapa final (el descuartizamiento) consistía en decapitar el cadáver y dividir el torso en cuatro partes para exhibirlas por toda la ciudad como advertencia para los demás.
1. The Hanging (Right)
On the right side, a group of condemned men is shown hanging from a heavy wooden gallows. In executions for treason, the prisoners were typically hanged by the neck but cut down while they were still alive and conscious so they would experience the subsequent stages of the punishment.
2. The Drawing / Disemboweling (Center)
In the center, a man is strapped to a ladder or bench. An executioner—wearing a helmet and doublet typical of 16th or 17th-century soldier attire—stands over him. This stage involved emasculating and disemboweling the prisoner while they were still alive.
3. The Burning of Entrails (Left)
On the far left, a large fire is ablaze. An assistant uses a long pole to hold up an object—often the prisoner's heart or entrails—before casting it into the flames. The final stage (quartering) involved beheading the corpse and dividing the torso into four parts to be displayed across the city as a warning to others.
