FRAY BARTOLOME DE MEDINA ( 1527 - 1580 )

Fray Bartolomé de Medina fue un Teólogo y Humanista Dominico, Catedrático en la Universidad de Salamanca formo parte de la denominada Escuela de Salamanca, iniciador del probabilismo fue ordenado sacerdote en 1546, en 1569 es nombrado Vicerrector , falleció a finales de Diciembre de 1580.

Fray Bartolomé de Medina was a Dominican Theologian and Humanist, Professor at the University of Salamanca, he was part of the so-called School of Salamanca, initiator of probabilism, he was ordained priest in 1546, in 1569 and Vice Rector , he died at the end of December 1580.

Tipología y Atuendo:
Se le representa de medio cuerpo, orientado ligeramente en tres cuartos hacia su izquierda, vistiendo el característico hábito de la Orden de Predicadores (Dominicos), con la tonsura clerical visible y portando una pluma en la mano derecha (atributo clásico de los doctores, escritores y grandes exégetas).
Estructura Formal:
El retrato se inscribe en un óvalo o medallón que descansa sobre un pedestal o zócalo rectangular que alberga la cartela de identificación, una composición arquetípica en las series de retratos de hombres ilustres de la época.

Typology and Attire:
He is depicted in half-length, turned slightly to his left in three-quarter view, wearing the characteristic habit of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), with the clerical tonsure visible and holding a quill pen in his right hand (a classic attribute of doctors, writers, and great exegetes).
Formal Structure:
The portrait is inscribed within an oval or medallion resting on a rectangular pedestal or base that houses the identification cartouche, an archetypal composition in portrait series of illustrious men of the period.

ORIGEN DE LA EDICIÓN:

Este tipo de estampas solía formar parte de frontispicios de sus propias obras teológicas impresas de manera póstuma (como sus comentarios a la Summa Theologiae de Santo Tomás) o bien integraba repertorios e iconografías de las crónicas e historias de varones ilustres de la Orden de Predicadores editadas en los Países Bajos, Francia o la propia España durante el siglo XVII o principios del XVIII.

This type of print was usually part of the frontispieces of his own theological works printed posthumously (such as his commentaries on the Summa Theologiae of Saint Thomas) or it was integrated into repertoires and iconographies of the chronicles and histories of illustrious men of the Order of Preachers published in the Netherlands, France or Spain itself during the 17th or early 18th century.

Se observa una ejecución limpia al burin (talla dulce), combinada con sutiles trabajos de aguafuerte para las texturas del hábito y los sombreados del fondo del nicho, con líneas concéntricas densas dentro del óvalo para resaltar la volumetría del retratado.

A clean execution is observed using burin (intaglio carving), combined with subtle etching work for the textures of the habit and the shading of the background of the niche, with dense concentric lines within the oval to highlight the volume of the portrayed person
