Arnauld Ossatus was an Italian Cardinal, Bishop of Rennes, writer, and apostolic nuncio to the court of Henry IV of France.

This style of formal line engraving—featuring an oval frame mounted on an inscribed pedestal with a coats-of-arms crest—was standard for European printed portraits of this era. Prints of Cardinal Arnaud d'Ossat were frequently produced posthumously to serve as frontispieces for editions of his widely published diplomatic correspondence (Lettres du Cardinal d'Ossat).
