LA COSMOGRAFÍA

Sebastián Munster ( 1488 - 1552 ) fue un humanista del renacimiento Alemán, matematico, cosmografo, eminente hebraista, astronomo, cartografo y gran erudito en distintas materias , impartió clases en las universidades de Heidelberg, Lovaina y Friburgo y fue rector en la universidad de Basilea donde abrazo la causa protestante, de joven entró a formar parte de la orden Franciscana donde cultivo distintas materias entre ellas las matemáticas, la geografía la cartografía y el hebreo, en 1512 en la ciudad de Friburgo fue ordenado sacerdote, el trabajo en lengua hebrea de Sebastian MÜnster es muy numeroso publicando diferentes diccionarios del hebreo al aleman así como la traducción de numerosos textos del latín al alemán.

Sebastian Münster (1488–1552) was a German Renaissance humanist, mathematician, cosmographer, eminent Hebrew scholar, astronomer, cartographer, and great scholar in various subjects. He taught at the universities of Heidelberg, Leuven, and Freiburg and was rector at the University of Basel. As a young man, he joined the Franciscan order, where he studied various subjects, including mathematics, geography, cartography, and Hebrew. In 1512, he was ordained a priest in the city of Freiburg. His work in the Hebrew language is extensive, and he translated numerous works into Latin.

La obra mas importante de Sebastian Münster fue la cosmographiae Universalis editada en 1544 en lengua Alemana, y ampliada durante las distintas ediciones que se hicieron durante el siglo XVI, su propósito fue la de elaborar una descripción del mundo conocido hasta entonces, sus gentes, ciudades mas importantes, costumbres y religiones, la obra fue enriquecida con abundantes xilografías que representaban reyes y principes, flora y fauna, mostruos ,prodigios, y horrores que formaban parte de las leyendas de los distintos lugares y a su vez una cartografia muy extensa de mapas de ciudades europeas y en especial de ciudades Alemanas.

Sebastian Münster's most important work was Cosmographiae Universalis, published in German in 1544 and expanded during various reissues throughout the 16th century. Its purpose was to provide a description of the world known at that time, its peoples, most important cities, customs, and religions. The work was enriched with abundant woodcuts depicting kings and princes, flora and fauna, monsters, wonders, legends, and horrors that were part of the legends of different places.

Sebastian Münster dedicó parte de su vida a la creación de la Cosmografía que en la ultimas ediciones constaba de 1325 paginas divididas en 6 volúmenes, la cosmografía de Munster fue la mas popular de las cartografías renacentistas y fue traducida a numerosos idiomas, agrupó el testigo de distintos viajeros de la época y a su vez mantuvo correspondencia con abades, clérigos reyes y nobles que le facilitaron información de sus reinos y lugares recibiendo algún que otro apoyo económico, la colección de grabado en retrato Peña - Ginés posee tres xilografias pertenecientes a las ultimas ediciones de la cosmografia de Salvador MÚnster, la primera representa un hombre con un instrumento de medición, la segunda un clérigo y la tercera un noble .

Sebastian Münster devoted part of his life to creating his Cosmography, which in its latest editions consisted of 1,325 pages divided into six volumes. Münster's cosmography was the most popular of the Renaissance cartographies and was translated into numerous languages. It brought together the accounts of numerous travelers of the time and, in turn, he corresponded with abbots, clergy, kings, and nobles who provided him with information about their kingdoms and places, as well as receiving some financial support. The Peña portrait collection - Ginés collection has three woodcuts belonging to the last editions of Salvador Munster's cosmography. The first depicts a man with a measuring instrument, the second a clergyman, and the third a nobleman.
