------------------

The oval frame (cartouche) is a classic device used in the 17th and 18th centuries for portrait engravings. It mimics the look of a framed miniature painting or a monumental stone medallion, separating the subject from the mundane world and elevating them to a status of historical importance. The Jabot / Geneva Bands (the white rectangular collar tabs) and draped robe indicate his position as a magistrate, lawyer, or royal advocate (Advocatus Regis).

The full, flowing allonge wig was the ultimate symbol of high social standing, fashion, and authority in the court of Louis XIV.

The portrait rests upon a faux-stone architectural plinth or tomb-like monument. In portrait iconography, this device often symbolizes legacy, permanence, and civic virtue—framing the living man as a pillar of society whose reputation is set in stone.

Displayed centrally on the pedestal beneath a coronet, the heraldic shield flanked by rampant lions serves as a visual signature of noble lineage, territorial jurisdiction (Lord of Ceresay, Viscount of L'Enteuil and Parca), and familial honor.
