CONTEXTO / CONTEXT :

During this historical period, Augsburg was one of Europe’s major hubs for the publication of genealogical books, illustrated chronicles, and copperplate engravings. Engravers such as the Fleming Dominicus Custos settled in Augsburg, blending the meticulous detail and technical rigor of the Low Countries with the monumental quality of the Mannerism that prevailed in Germanic and Central European courts under the patronage of the Habsburgs. The influence of this school remained deeply rooted in the city through local artists like Lucas and Wolfgang Kilian, who perpetuated this style of courtly, official, and heraldic portraiture—a style characteristic of the upper bourgeoisie and the nobility of the Holy Roman Empire.
