ANTOINE DE GONDI. Grabado del siglo XVII

ANTOINE DE GONDI
17rh century engraving

Antoine de Gondi was born in Florence into a noble family of patrician bankers. He moved to France in the early 16th century and settled in Lyon, where he worked as a merchant and banker, quickly becoming integrated into the financial circles of the French crown. In 1516, he consolidated his position through his marriage to Marie-Catherine de Pierrevive, an influential lady-in-waiting with close ties to Queen Margaret of Navarre. Thanks to royal patronage and the growing influence of his wife—who was appointed governess to the royal children—Gondi entered the direct service of the royal household. He acquired the estates of Le Perron and Toussay and attained the prestigious position of Premier Maître d'Hôtel to Henry II of France, a highly trusted position overseeing the workings of the king's household. Antoine de Gondi is considered the founder of the French branch of the House of Gondi, one of the most powerful aristocratic dynasties in 16th- and 17th-century France.
