Michael Virdung von Hantung fue un erudito, humanista, poeta y profesor Alemán, tras ocuparse en Bohemia de la educación de los hijos del Baron Sigismund Smirzirs es nombrado en 1605 académico en la Universidad de Altdorf en Núremberg donde ocupo las cátedras de política, história y retorica, con el estallido de la guerra de los treinra años es nombrado concejal de la ciudad de Altdorf. Michael Virdung logro impedir tras una rogativa en latín dirigida a los generales de los ejércitos católicos Johann T'serclaes von Tilly y Heinrich von Holck que incendiaran y saquearan la ciudad, falleció el 28 de Octubre de 1637.
Michael Virdung von Hantung was a German scholar, humanist, poet and professor; After working in Bohemia as tutor to the children of Baron Sigismund Smirzirs, he was appointed in 1605 as a professor at the University of Altdorf in Nuremberg, where he held the chairs of politics, history and rhetoric; with the outbreak of the Thirty Years’ War, he was appointed councillor of the town of Altdorf. Michael Virdung succeeded in preventing the Catholic army generals Johann T'serclaes von Tilly and Heinrich von Holck from burning and plundering the town following a plea in Latin addressed to them; he died on 28 October 1637.

Técnica del buril:
Realizada principalmente con un buril de acero que incide directamente sobre una placa de cobre. Líneas paralelas profundas y nítidas definen los tonos oscuros de la prenda y el fondo exterior, mientras que trazos más finos y juntos forman el sutil modelado del rostro y el cuello.
Tramado cruzado y gama tonal:
El lado sombreado del rostro y los contornos del cuello se basan en un delicado tramado cruzado para crear un sutil volumen y sombra, contrastando con las densas líneas horizontales unidireccionales que rellenan el fondo ovalado.
Grabado caligráfico:
El cartucho inferior presenta dinámicos adornos caligráficos de trazo grueso y fino. Estos se cortaron con un buril especializado de punta cuadrada o se grabaron ligeramente antes del grabado para mantener trazos fluidos y continuos.
Burin Technique:
Produced primarily with a steel burin directly incising copper plate. Deep, clean parallel lines define the dark tones of the garment and outer background, while finer, tightly spaced burin strokes form the subtle modeling on the face and neck.
Cross-Hatching & Tonal Range:
The shadow side of the face and the contours of the collar rely on delicate cross-hatching to build subtle volume and shadow, contrasting with the dense, single-direction horizontal lines filling the oval background.
Calligraphic Etching/Engraving:
The lower cartouche features dynamic thick-and-thin penmanship-style flourishes. These were either cut with a specialized square-ended burin or lightly etched prior to engraving to maintain fluid, continuous sweeps.
