SAN EMMERAN DE RATISBONA. Grabado del Siglo XVII

SAN EMMERAN DE RATISBONA  ( ? - 652 D.C. )

Born in Aquitaine (in present-day France) into a noble family, he was consecrated as a bishop in his native region before embarking on an evangelizing mission toward Eastern Europe. Upon his arrival in Regensburg, Duke Theodo II of Bavaria asked him to remain in the region—rather than continuing on to Pannonia—to strengthen the Christian faith and consolidate evangelization efforts within his domains. According to the hagiography written by Arbeo of Freising, the Duke’s daughter, Uta, became pregnant out of wedlock. To protect her from scandal and spare the person responsible from brutal retaliation, Emmeram took it upon himself to address the situation and set out on a pilgrimage to Rome. However, the young woman’s brother, Lantpert, pursued him—believing him to be the one responsible—and had him executed in an exceptionally cruel manner near Kleinhelfendorf on September 22, 652. After his innocence was revealed and miracles were attributed to him, his remains were moved to Regensburg, where the renowned Abbey of Saint Emmeram was later established. He subsequently became one of the most significant patron saints of both the diocese and Bavaria.

JEAN JACQUES ROUSSEAU. Grabado del Siglo XIX

JEAN JACQUES ROUSSEAU  ( 1712 - 1778 )

Jean-Jacques Rousseau was a Genevan polymath, philosopher, educator, writer, and composer, considered one of the most influential figures of the 18th century and a key thinker of the Enlightenment. Although he belonged to the era of the Encyclopedists, his ideas—critical of pure rationalism—paved the way for the Romantic movement.

The engraving draws direct inspiration from the celebrated bust of Rousseau created by Jean-Antoine Houdon in 1778 (based on the philosopher’s death mask), while also incorporating elements from painted portraits by Maurice Quentin de La Tour (1753) and Allan Ramsay (1766). It employs a three-quarter view—a short bust portrait featuring a vignette effect along the bottom and side edges—a style characteristic of 19th-century French editorial illustration.

Henry of Orléans—Duke of Longueville, Estouteville, and Coulommiers; Sovereign Prince of Neuchâtel and Valangin; Count of Dunois—was a prominent 17th-century French aristocrat, diplomat, and noble military figure, descended from the Valois dynasty.

The figure is set within an oval that mimics a medal. This rhetorical device evokes ancient numismatics and commemorative medallions, associating the subject with classical heroes and enduring legacy. The figure gazes directly at the viewer while turning his torso slightly, an arrangement that imparts both dynamism and a sense of sovereign dignity. He wears a burnished metal cuirass adorned with engraved motifs. This armor serves as a symbol of his status as a military leader, governor of provinces (Picardy and Normandy), and defender of the Crown. A sash worn diagonally across his chest signifies his supreme military rank as commander of the royal armies. He wears a wide, flat Flemish lace collar—a *valona*—and sports a hairstyle of voluminous, curly locks. These elements reflect the ostentation and refinement of the court of Louis XIII and the regency of Anne of Austria, balancing martial ferocity with aristocratic sophistication. At the bottom center of the frame lies the coat of arms of the Orléans-Longueville family, denoting his direct lineage as a descendant of Jean de Dunois (the "Bastard of Orléans")—a hero of the Hundred Years' War and a member of the House of Valois. A ducal or princely coronet surmounts the shield, reaffirming his rank as a Peer of France and Sovereign Prince of Neuchâtel.
