ICONOGRAFÍA / ICONOGRAPHY
Vestimenta y postura:

Habit and Posture:
The subject is clothed in the coarse, hooded habit of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, complete with a long beard typifying the reformed Franciscan movement. His hands are crossed over his breast (passio posture), signaling profound personal humility, interior devotion, and submission to divine will.

Bookshelf Background (Scrinium):
The library backdrop behind the subject directly symbolizes theological erudition, scholarly composition, and his esteemed status as an official papal preacher.

Refusal of the Red Hat:
The composition purposefully pairs academic scholarly attributes with a posture of pious reserve to reinforce the textual claim that he humbly rejected the cardinalate (ad Romanam Purpuram designatus refugiens).

Heraldic Shield:
Located at the lower apex of the oval frame, the coat of arms displays the noble Lomellini family crest (three trefoils/clover leaves beneath a chief), affirming his patrician Genoese origins before taking religious vows.

Framing Architecture:
Encased within a trompe-l'œil stone architectural niche with an oval garland-topped medallion, a visual convention used in 17th- and 18th-century portraiture to denote posthumous veneration and historical importance.

MARCELLUS PP I. Grabado del Siglo XVII

MARCELLUS PP I.
17th century engraving

MARCELLUS PP. I  ( ? - 309 )

Marcellus P.P.

Marcellus P.P. I. was the 30th bishop of Rome and successor of St, Peter, venerated as a saint by the catholic and orthodox churches.

ICONOGRAFÍA / ICONOGRAPHY::

_____________________________
The scene illustrates the martyrdom and humiliation described in Baroque hagiographic sources for this pope. According to Christian tradition, Emperor Maxentius condemned Pope Marcellus to forced labor tending animals in the public stables (the Catabulum) located within his own private church.

The setting:
Callot masterfully situates the oval composition within a stable of classical and austere architecture. On the left, the hindquarters of several horses lined up in mangers are visible.

The main figure:
Pope Marcellus apprs stripped of his pontifical vestments, kneeling in fervent prayer, wearing a rustic tunic and with a halo of sanctity.ea

The attributes:
In front of him, resting directly on the stable floor, is the papal tiara, or triple crown, emphasizing the contrast between his spiritual dignity and the profound physical humiliation to which he is subjected. In the background on the right, under a wooden structure, figures of soldiers or guards armed with spears can be seen protecting the place.

OBSERVACIONES / OBSERVATIONS :

This print appeared between 1600 and 1630 as part of a series of 122 plates representing saints and religious events of each day of the year.

__________________________________

In the classic cataloging of Callot's work (as in Jules Lieure's catalogue raisonné), these pieces originally formed part of larger plates containing four oval scenes per sheet, corresponding to the consecutive days of the Roman liturgical calendar. These larger plates were frequently fragmented or cut out for individual sale or inclusion as separate illustrations. The clean lines of the etching and the intaglio typography in this example are characteristic of 17th- and early 18th-century French editions based on Henriet's original plates.
