François de Malherbe fue un poeta francés, una de sus obra mas importantes las lagrimas de San Pedro vieron la luz en 1598, fue el poeta oficial en las cortes de Enrique IV de Francia, durante la regencia de Maria de Medicis y posteriormente durante el reinado de luis XIII.

François de Malherbe was a French poet. One of his most important works, Les Larmes de Saint Pierre (The Tears of Saint Peter), was published in 1598. He was the official poet at the courts of Henry IV of France during the regency of Marie de Medici and later during the reign of Louis XIII.

Esta estampa fue realizada originalmente para ilustrar la monumental obra biográfica de Charles Perrault, Les Hommes illustres qui ont paru en France pendant ce siècle, publicada en París por Antoine Dezallier entre 1696 y 1700.

La serie de retratos encargada a Lubin para esta edición se caracteriza precisamente por esta suntuosa estructura: el personaje enmarcado en un óvalo recortado, dispuesto sobre un zócalo o repisa de líneas verticales donde se inscribe el nombre del ilustre en caligrafía cursiva, coronando el conjunto con el escudo de armas heráldico en la parte inferior central del marco.

This print was originally created to illustrate Charles Perrault's monumental biographical work, *Les Hommes illustres qui ont paru en France pendant ce siècle*, published in Paris by Antoine Dezallier between 1696 and 1700. The series of portraits commissioned from Lubin for this edition is characterized precisely by this sumptuous structure: the subject framed in a cut-out oval, placed on a plinth or shelf of vertical lines where the illustrious figure's name is inscribed in cursive calligraphy, the whole crowned with a heraldic coat of arms in the lower center of the frame.
