Augustus es un grabado a buril perteneciente a la serie de alegorías y labores que se realizaban en la campiña francesa durante los doce meses del año concernientes en la denominada Escuela de Fontaineblau y atribuidas al Grabador Renacentista Etienne Delaine ( 1518 - 1583 ), estas estampas sirvieron de modelo para decorar alguna de las muchas estancias del Palacio, esta serie de doce planchas gozaron del privilegio real y es muy probable que fueran realizadas antes de la partida del grabador de Francia tras la masacre del día de san Bartolomé en 1572.

Durante la revolución francesa parte del palacio se incendió convirtiéndose en caserna y posteriormente en prisión desapareciendo parte de su decoración original y mobiliario no fue hasta 1804 cuando Napoleón recondicionó Fontaineblau y lo convirtió en parte de su corte restaurando la mayoría de estancias y espacios al gusto de la epoca.

Augustus belongs to the series of allegories of the labours of the twelve months of the year concerning the School of Fontaineblau and attributed to the Renaissance engraver Etienne Delaine (1518 - 1583), these prints served as a model to decorate some of the many rooms of the Palace, this series of twelve plates enjoyed royal privilege and it is very likely that they were made before the departure of the engraver from France after the massacre of Saint Bartholomew's Day and they could be dated between 1550 and 1572.

During the French Revolution, part of the palace burnt down and was converted into a barracks and later into a prison, with part of its original decoration and furnishings disappearing. It was not until 1804 that Napoleon reconditioned Fontaineblau and converted it into part of his court, restoring most of the rooms to the taste of the time.
