 LUDOVICUS  DE  MONTOYA  

( 1497 - 1569 ) 

Fray Luis de Montoya (1497–1569), natural de Belmonte (Aragón), tomó los hábitos en Salamanca y fue una de las figuras espirituales más influyentes de la orden en la península ibérica durante el siglo XVI. Dedicó gran parte de su vida a la reforma de la Provincia agustina de Portugal, donde gozó de una altísima estima en la corte lusa, llegando a ser el confessor y guía espiritual del joven rey Sebastián I de Portugal.

Friar Luis de Montoya (1497–1569), a native of Belmonte (Aragon), took his vows in Salamanca and was one of the most influential spiritual figures of the order in the Iberian Peninsula during the 16th century. He dedicated much of his life to the reform of the Augustinian Province of Portugal, where he enjoyed immense esteem at the Portuguese court, becoming the confessor and spiritual guide of the young King Sebastian I of Portugal.

Esta estampa fue realizada como ilustración para la célebre obra del teólogo agustino Cornelius Curtius, titulada Virorum illustrium ex ordine Eremitarum D. Augustini elogia cum iconibus, publicada en Amberes en 1636. La serie de retratos de este volumen destaca por su característico marco calcográfico de estilo barroco, decorado con volutas de rocalla y rematado en la parte superior por dos putti alados que sostienen una guirnalda.

This print was made as an illustration for the famous work of the Augustinian theologian Cornelius Curtius, entitled Virorum illustrium ex ordine Eremitarum D. Augustini labios cum iconibus, published in Antwerp in 1636. The series of portraits in this volume stands out for its characteristic Baroque-style chalcographic frame, decorated with rocaille scrolls and topped by two winged putti holding a garland.
