Edmundus Pouchot, Catedratico de Filosofia, vice-canciller , rector de la Universidad de Paris y un notable Hebraísta, publicó algunos ensayos sobre filosofía que alcanzaron cierta notoriedad en la europa de finales del Siglo XVII y principios del XVIII, fue simpatizante y defensor del movimiento intelectual de René Descartes.

Edmundus Pouchot, Professor of Philosophy, vice-chancellor, rector of the University of Paris and a notable Hebraist, published some essays on philosophy that achieved certain notoriety in Europe in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, was a sympathizer and defender of the intellectual movement of René Descartes.

ICONOGRAFÍA / ICONOGRAPHY :

El retrato presenta a Pourchot en un marco ovalado sobre un pedestal de piedra, vestido con su toga y bandas académicas (rabat), y luciendo una llamativa peluca. Las esquinas que rodean el marco ovalado contienen ricos símbolos alegóricos que reflejan sus logros académicos:

Arriba a la izquierda:

Un triángulo con escritura hebrea (que representa el Tetragrámaton o la sabiduría divina).

Arriba a la derecha:

Una personificación femenina que sostiene una balanza y un barco, probablemente simbolizando la Justicia, la Prudencia o el gobierno de la universidad.

Abajo a la izquierda y a la derecha:

Una esfera armilar y un globo terráqueo, que aluden directamente a su trabajo en física cartesiana, cosmología y matemáticas.
