A bust-length portrait set within a simulated oval frame—rendered as molding—resting on a stone pedestal or plinth. The subject is Prince William, Duke of Gloucester, the only surviving child of Queen Anne of Great Britain to outlive infancy, who died tragically at the age of eleven in 1700. He wears classical attire with an ermine mantle fastened at the shoulder by a circular jewel or brooch, and displays the star of the Order of the Garter on his chest.
