FR.

At this time, the Order reached its zenith and played a crucial military role in defending the Mediterranean against Turkish invasion. Nevertheless, his reign saw the fall of Constantinople in 1453, which ushered in a century of Ottoman naval dominance over the Eastern Mediterranean. Under his successor, Jacques de Milly, the Order of Malta was torn by internal disputes.

François de L'Hospital (also spelled L'Hôpital), Seigneur du Hallier and Count (later Duke) of Rosnay, was a Marshal of France who distinguished himself in the conflicts of the 17th century, participating in the Thirty Years' War and commanding the army's left wing at the famous Battle of Rocroi under the orders of the Great Condé.

The effigy, set within an oval frame, mimics a relief portrait or a sculpted classical bust—a humanist device inherited from the Renaissance that links the subject's virtue and enduring fame to the classical world. His torso is protected by a richly decorated plate cuirass, symbolizing his martial status, combat readiness, and standing as a knight. The sash crossing his chest served as the supreme military badge of rank for commanders and high-ranking officers on the battlefield of that era. Through the opening beside the drapery, one glimpses a landscape featuring troops in formation, artillery smoke, and a city or fortification in the background. This narrative element transforms the psychological portrait into a visual chronicle of his exploits, reminding the viewer that his authority stems from success in the theater of war. The heavy, drawn-back curtain reveals the scene—a classic Baroque motif signifying dignity, high rank, and the solemn unveiling of an illustrious figure to the public eye. The cartouche at the bottom serves as a complementary documentary and iconographic element; by rigorously listing his titles (Councillor of State, Captain of a Hundred Men-at-Arms, Marshal of France), it provides legal and social validation for the effigy, ensuring the portrait fulfills both propagandistic and commemorative functions.

The engraving dates to the Late Baroque period (or the transitional era between the 17th and 18th centuries, spanning the reign of Louis XIV in France and the graphic art of the Spanish Netherlands during that time). In the history of art and printmaking, this era represents the golden age of intaglio and reproductive engraving in Flanders and France, a time that saw a massive surge in illustrated books covering historical, biographical, and genealogical subjects.

CONTEXTO / CONTEXT:

These types of portraits were part of biographical and historical series printed in volumes published in Flanders, France, or Germany (such as collections of French historical memoirs or the noble directories that were highly popular at the time), and were printed on the laid rag paper characteristic of European publications during the transition to the eighteenth century. FRANCESCO PETRARCA. Grabado del Siglo XVIII

FRANCESCO PETRARCA  ( 1304 - 1374 )

Francesco Petrarca was an Italian poet, philosopher, and philologist, widely recognized as the father of humanism and one of the key figures of the early Renaissance. He was born in Tuscany, although his family was forced to move to Avignon, France, due to his father's political exile. Although he studied law at his family's insistence, his true passion was classical Latin literature; this led him to abandon the legal profession after his father's death to devote himself entirely to letters. He spent much of his life traveling across Europe, seeking out and recovering forgotten manuscripts by Greco-Roman authors (such as Cicero). His conviction that education should be grounded in the classics laid the foundations for humanist thought. In 1327, in Avignon, he met Laura—a woman he loved with idealized devotion and who became the primary inspiration for his lyric poetry. His work *Canzoniere* (Songbook), centered on his feelings for her, marked a seminal milestone in Western lyric poetry. He enjoyed immense literary and intellectual renown during his lifetime. In 1341, he was officially crowned poet laureate on the Capitoline Hill in Rome—an extraordinary public honor for that era. He spent his final years living in various cities across northern Italy (such as Milan, Venice, and Padua), devoting himself entirely to study, writing, and compiling his texts, until his death in Arquà in 1374.

From an iconographic perspective, this print brings together the traditional attributes that established the canonical image of Francesco Petrarch in Western art. Petrarch is typically depicted wearing a close-fitting cap or a cloth hood—standard attire for scholars, clergy, and humanists during the 14th and 15th centuries. At the base of the oval, a lyre and a lit torch cross one another, framed by laurel and oak branches. The lyre represents lyric poetry and song—the union of music and metrical poetry that he cultivated in his *Canzoniere*—while the lit torch symbolizes the sacred fire of creative genius, intellectual enlightenment, and enduring memory. The bust-length composition set within a sculptural oval—mimicking classical cameos or reliefs—seeks to elevate the figure to the stature of the ancient sages of classical Greece and Rome, reinforcing the humanist ideal of reviving Antiquity.

CONTEXTO / CONTEXT:

During the 18th century—particularly in Enlightenment France—there was immense enthusiasm for compiling, editing, and disseminating biographies of famous figures from world history (philosophers, poets, monarchs, and sages). These works were typically published as multi-volume encyclopedic collections (hence the notation "Vol. 1, p. 149" on the plate), designed to educate and delight the literate bourgeoisie and nobility.
