Cornelius de Coninck was a key figure in the administration of the Netherlands during the 16th century and was closely linked to the early days of the University. Although exact dates vary slightly across local genealogical and historical sources from Leiden, contemporary records place his life roughly between 1515 and 1582. He belonged to a prominent family in the Netherlands—often associated with the minor nobility or the urban patriciate of Holland—with ties to the Bloys area. He held significant political and administrative posts, serving as a councilor and mayor (*burgemeester*) of Leiden during a period of profound political and religious transformation marked by the Eighty Years' War and the revolt of the United Provinces against the Spanish Monarchy. Leiden University was founded in 1575 by William of Orange following the famous Siege of Leiden. Coninck was a member of the first select group of curators (administrators and patrons) charged with overseeing the governance, funding, faculty selection, and autonomy of the newly created academic institution—the first university of the United Provinces.

GIAMBATTISTA MARINO. Grabado del Siglo XVII

GIAMBATTISTA MARINO  ( 1569 - 1625 )

Giambattista Marino was one of the most celebrated, influential, and controversial poets of Baroque Italy. He is considered the foremost exponent of *Marinism* (an aesthetic movement characterized by preciosity, an accumulation of complex metaphors, formal wit, and a constant quest to evoke a sense of wonder in the reader).

The laurel wreath is the quintessential classical symbol of poetry, immortality, and intellectual triumph. Crowned with laurel leaves, Marino is portrayed not merely as a courtier or nobleman (*Eques*), but as the undisputed sovereign of letters and a poet laureate acclaimed throughout Europe.

The sumptuous pleated ruff and the fine fur-trimmed cloak underscore his high social status, worldly success, and the wealth gained through his patronage at European courts—such as those of the Medici and Louis XIII of France—as well as his dignity as a knight of the order (*Eques*).
The portrait is set within an oval that mimics a classical medallion or a framed relief—a Renaissance and Baroque device that lends the figure a monumental, timeless, and heroic quality, akin to that of the emperors or sages of Greco-Roman antiquity.

Mariana of Austria was born in Wiener Neustadt, the daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III and Infanta Maria Anna of Spain. She was initially betrothed to the heir apparent, Balthasar Charles (her cousin), but following his sudden death in 1646, she married King Philip IV by proxy in 1648, followed by an in-person ceremony in 1649. This marriage produced two children: Infanta Margaret Theresa and the future King Charles II. Upon the death of Philip IV in 1665, she assumed the regency of the Spanish Monarchy due to her son Charles II's minority. Her administration had to contend with a severe economic crisis, military pressure from the France of Louis XIV, and the definitive independence of Portugal (Treaty of Lisbon, 1668). During her rule, she was heavily influenced by trusted advisors—such as the German Jesuit Juan Everardo Nithard—which sparked political tensions with her stepson, Don John of Austria. After Charles II came of age, she continued to play an active role in the court's dynastic and international politics until her death in Madrid in May 1696.

The queen is framed within an oval supported by an upper cartouche featuring ribbons and hanging bows—a classic device in Roman funerary and commemorative art that elevates the subject to the status of a historic figure or illustrious dignitary. She wears the hairstyle characteristic of mid-17th-century court fashion (featuring side volume created by coiled buns) and a starched lace ruff, symbols of the Habsburgs' high aristocratic lineage. Distinctive emblems of devotion and rank adorn her bodice; notable among them is a pectoral cross—or an encrusted jewel with pearl pendants—signifying her royal status and Catholic piety. Positioned at the bottom center and surmounted by the royal crown—depicted as either open or closed, in accordance with Habsburg heraldry—the composition combines the coat of arms of Spain with the dynastic quarters reflecting her role as regent and queen mother.
