JEAN ANTOINE DE MESMES ( 1598 - 1673 )
Jean Antoine de Mesmes, Conde de Avaux, fue un magistrado, miembro de la Academia Francesa, primer presidente del parlamento de París , consejero de estado, caballero de la Mouche a miel, y de la Societe du temple y distinguido con la orden del Santo Espiritu, fue un protector de las artes y frecuento los Nuits de Sceaux que Mademoiselle de Charolais ofrecia en su castillo de Sceaux.
Jean Antoine de Mesme, count of Avaux was a magistrate member of The French Academy, first president of the pairlament of Paris, councilor of state, knight pf the mouche a miel, anf of the societe du temple and distinghuished with the order of the Holy Spirit, he was a protector of the art and frequented the Nuits de Sceaux that Mademoiselle de Charolais offered in her castle os Sceaux.

Indumentaria:
El retratado viste la vestidura solemne de la alta magistratura parlamentaria francesa, caracterizada por la amplia piel de armiño (fourrure) dispuesta sobre los hombros y el pecho, sobre su toga oscura, y el casquete o solideo clerical/judicial característico.
Heráldica:
En la base del pedestal resalta el escudo de armas ovalado de la familia de Mesmes: cuartelado; 1º y 4º de sable, con un creciente de argén (plata); 2º y 3º de argén, con dos palas o marcas de azur acompañadas de tres estrellas. El escudo se encuentra coronado (corona de conde/marqués según la dignidad familiar de sus ramas) y flanqueado por soportes de leones rampantes.

Attire:
The subject wears the solemn vestments of a high-ranking French parliamentary magistrate, characterized by a wide ermine fur (fourrure) draped over the shoulders and chest, over a dark toga, and the characteristic clerical/judicial skullcap.Heraldry:At the base of the pedestal stands the oval coat of arms of the Mesmes family: quartered; 1st and 4th sable, with a crescent argent; 2nd and 3rd argent, with two pales or marks azure accompanied by three stars. The shield is crowned (with a coronet of a count/marquis, according to the family rank of its branches) and flanked by supporters of rampant lions.

OBSERVACIONES / OBSERVATION:
Este grabado, ejecutado en 1662, posee una huella de tórculo (plate mark) limpia y nítida y está impreso sobre un papel de época de gran gramaje. Formalmente, este tipo de retratos de busto con pedestal y cartela heráldica solían publicarse o bien como hojas sueltas destinadas a colecciones e iconografías de magistrados contemporáneos, o bien sirviendo de pomposo frontispicio para crónicas legales, panegíricos familiares o dedicatorias de tesis jurídicas en el París del reinado de Luis XIV.
This engraving, executed in 1662, has a clean and clear plate mark and is printed on heavy period paper. Formally, this type of bust portrait with pedestal and heraldic cartouche was usually published either as loose sheets intended for collections and iconographies of contemporary magistrates, or as a pompous frontispiece for legal chronicles, family panegyrics, or dedications of legal theses in Paris during the reign of Louis XIV.
