NICOLAS BERGHEM.Grabado del Siglo XVIII

NICOLAS BERGHEM  ( 1624 - 1683 )

Nicolaes Berchem (referred to in the French inscription as Nicolas Berghem) was one of the leading figures in Italian-style pastoral landscape painting during the Dutch Golden Age.

The portrait captures Berchem with his characteristic long wavy hair, a subtle mustache and lower lip tuft, a buttoned doublet, and a prominent collar typical of mid-17th-century Dutch attire. Fiquet’s rendition places the figure within a refined, classicizing oval stone frame resting on an architectural plinth with vertical parallel hatching to simulate texture and depth.

OBSERVACIONES / OBSERVATION :

  • The imprint:

The address of Pierre Bertrand at the Pomme d'Or helps to place this print within a specific 17th-century edition. Variants of this same series exist where Larmessin's plates later passed into the hands of other publishers on Rue Saint-Jacques (such as Larmessin's own heirs or Bertrand's widow), which sometimes altered or erased the original imprint.

NOSTRA SENYORA DEL REMEY. Grabado del Siglo XVIII

18th Century engraving

This piece is an example of popular Catalan religious prints, most likely the header or central engraving of a sheet of Goigs (joys) or a separate devotional print, printed in the town of Olot (Girona).

ico o flanqueadores, sosteniendo gruesos cirios encendidos.

Inferior:
-----------------------------
Our Lady of Remedies:
The central iconography depicts the Virgin standing beneath a textured semicircular arch, with draperies gathered at the sides, emulating an altar or niche.
She wears a flowing royal mantle with stylized floral decoration.
She holds the Child Jesus in her left arm (who carries the globe) and a scepter or bouquet of flowers in her right hand.
She is crowned and haloed by a radiant glow of clear rays, resting upon an inverted crescent moon, a classic attribute of the Immaculate Conception adopted by other Marian devotions.

The Perimeter Border:
In a distinctly late Baroque or popular classicist style:

Upper:
A large canopy or domed textile pavilion crowns the sacred scene.

Later:
Two full-length angels (putti) act as heraldic supporters or flankers, holding thick, lit candles.

Lower:
At the base of the vegetal and rockery frame, a cartouche stands out with the monogram IHS (symbolizing the name of Jesus) topped by a small cross over the H.

FERNANDO DE AUSTRIA. 17th Century engraving

Ferdinand of Austria, Cardinal Infante of Spain, Archnishop of Toledo and primate of Spain, Viceroy of Catalonia between 1632 and 1633, Governor of Milan between 1633 and 1634 and finally Governor of the Spanish low Countries from 1634 until his death in 1641.

______________________
  • Oval portrait:

This is the characteristic and preferred format for series of portraits of rulers, nobles, and military figures from the Central European Baroque period (closely linked to the Antwerp workshops and Flemish/German prints of the mid-17th century).

  • Attributes of Command:

Don Fernando is portrayed in half armor, with the military sash across his chest and holding the baton of command in his left hand, unmistakable symbols of his status as Captain General. He also wears the characteristic flat lace ruff (valona) fashionable in the 1630s and 1640s.

  • Battle Background:

Behind the effigy, to the right, a meticulously detailed scene of a cavalry charge and military combat can be seen. This iconographic allusion is very common in his portraits to commemorate his great victory at the Battle of Nördlingen (1634) or his campaigns in Flanders.
