BIGAE. Grabado del Siglo XVIII

BIGAE

Bigae from the Latin *biga* (two-horse chariot).

    • _________________________

Iconographic analysis :

The central image mimics the classic oval shape of a Roman cameo. It depicts a deity or allegorical figure driving a chariot at a gallop:

* The Auriga:

The figure wears a classical tunic with dynamic folds and a cloak (chlamys) that billows dramatically behind him, forming a semicircular arch. This visual device (the velificatio) is a recurring classical motif in Roman art used to denote rapid movement, speed, or the celestial/divine nature of the figure (often associated with deities of nature, the wind, the Sun, or the Moon/Diana).

* The Horses:

Two horses depicted rearing (standing on their hind legs), captured with great dynamism. The engraver has outlined the muscles and manes with precise detail to emulate the depth of the relief carved in stone.

* The Chariot:

The wheel with four thick spokes, typical of numismatic depictions and representations of classical Rome, is clearly visible.

OBSERVACIONES / OBSERVATIONS :

This engraving is a magnificent example of the tradition of cataloging and reproducing so-called engraved gems (cameos and intaglios) from classical antiquity, a practice that reached its peak in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries.
