The Assassination of Amnon by Absalom's Servants: A classic biblical banquet scene from the Second Book of Samuel, where Absalom orders his men to strike down his brother Amnon during a feast once he is "merry with wine."
This is a fascinating historical woodcut, full of dramatic action and classic 16th-century stylistic hallmarks. Here is a breakdown of what is happening in the scene, the style, and the narrative clues.

__________________________

The print depicts a chaotic, violent confrontation cutting straight through a formal banquet or feast.

The Central Conflict:
In the middle of the composition, a man in classical military attire (armor and a kilt/pteruges) is violently pulling another man backward off his chair. The victim is being grabbed by his hair or head, while a sword or dagger is drawn.

The Banquet Table:
To the right, guests sit at a long table laden with plates. Their reactions are dramatic—hands are thrown up in shock, horror, and confusion. The figures on the far right wear draped clothing and headwear that suggests a classical, biblical, or exotic/Eastern setting (often used in Renaissance art to denote historical or foreign locales).

The Background Elements:
On the left, servants or attendants continue to bring in platters of food, seemingly unaware or just catching on to the violence. Above them, in an architectural archway, a figure appears to be blowing a horn or trumpet, possibly signaling an alarm, a triumph, or a ceremonial fan-fare that contrasts heavily with the assault below. Classical columns and drapery frame the entire scene.

The portrait presents Pelouze in a conventional half-length composition that fades toward the edges (vignette style), intensely focusing attention on his facial features, expression, and upper torso. He wears formal professional attire typical of the mid-19th century: a dark frock coat, a waistcoat, and a high, stiff collar encircled by a dark cravat. A discreet button or badge stands out on his lapel, likely signifying his status as a member of the French academic elite or the possession of official honors.
