HENRY MORE. Grabado del Siglo XIX

HENRY MORE
19th century engraving

 HENRY MORE ( 1614 - 1687 )

Henry More was a 17th century English philosopher of the Cambridge school.

Henry More (1614–1687), a renowned philosopher of the Cambridge Platonist school. Traditional iconography typically depicts him in clerical attire with a contemplative expression, reflecting his intellectual and theological profile. The inscription at the bottom indicates that it derives from "a scarce Print by Loggan" (a rare engraving by David Loggan)—a 17th-century artist known for his precise academic and ecclesiastical portraits—which originally served as a frontispiece or introductory engraving for More's poetic works (*Philosophical Poems*, 1647). It is an intaglio print (ink on paper), subsequently reproduced in the early 19th century using fine-line techniques on a copper or steel plate.

Thomas Otway is considered one of the most oustanding English dramatists of The Restoration period the reign of Charles II

The oval format—widely used in late 18th-century periodicals and biographical collections, such as the *Biographical Magazine*—isolates and ennobles the subject, lending him a classical, commemorative air akin to the busts of ancient philosophers or poets. Attire and portrait iconography: He wears the characteristic dress of the English Restoration era—long, full, wavy hair denoting distinction and intellectual status, paired with a dark coat of understated cut and a finely worked lace cravat or neckband. This type of lightweight neckwear was a common attribute of men of letters, clergy, and courtiers during the late Stuart period.
