The Military Uniform and Double-Breasted Coat:

Hoche is depicted wearing a standard high-collared military uniform of the French Revolutionary period, detailed with multiple brass buttons. This emphasizes his status as a brilliant young general (the "savior of the Republic" who pacified the Vendée and led the Sambre-et-Meuse army).

The Cloak / Mantle:

Draped heavily over his shoulder is a dark cloak or greatcoat. In neoclassical and romantic portraiture, a flowing cloak serves as a heroic device—often evoking classical Roman senators or military commanders, conveying solemnity, gravitas, and dramatic intensity.

Youthful and Idealized Physiognomy:

Hoche died suddenly at age 29 under mysterious circumstances (suspected poisoning by political rivals), which cemented his legacy as a tragic, youthful hero of the Republic. The print captures him with soft, idealized features, wavy romantic hair, and a direct, resolute gaze looking off into the distance, symbolizing visionary leadership.
