The portrait is enclosed in an oval laurel wreath held aloft by a winged putto (amorino).
At the base, an eagle (the traditional symbol of imperial nobility or high artistic soaring, but also closely linked to the coat of arms of Parma) holds a banderole in its beak.
On the sitter's doublet, a cross is visible, referencing his knighthood—he was created a Knight of the Order of Christ by Pope Urban VIII, hence the title "Le Ch[evalier] Jean Lanfranc".

Adopting a profile format within an oval medallion was a common convention in 18th-century portraiture (such as the famous collections of illustrious men and women), aiming for a classical, timeless quality inspired by Roman medals. She wears the curly hairstyle characteristic of the late 17th-century French court, accompanied by a headdress or light cap and a pearl necklace—elements that signify her aristocratic status. The design of the lower cartouche bearing the name, combined with the shading of parallel geometric lines (*taillage*) surrounding the oval, creates a sense of depth and gives the piece the appearance of a collector's print intended for an illustrated biographical or encyclopedic work.
