Mauricio I de Hesse - Kassel, apodado «el Ilustrado» (der Gelehrte), un personaje fascinante del Renacimiento tardío alemán, conocido por su inmensa cultura, su mecenazgo artístico y musical, y su trágico destino político durante la guerra de los Treinta Años.
Maurice I of Hesse-Kassel, nicknamed "the Enlightened" (der Gelehrte), a fascinating figure of the late German Renaissance, known for his immense culture, his artistic and musical patronage, and his tragic political fate during the Thirty Years' War.

El Landgrave aparece representado de busto, girado de tres cuartos hacia la derecha, mirando fijamente al espectador. Viste una suntuosa capa con forro de piel o brocado, un jubón abotonado y el característico cuello de encaje de tipo valona calada, típico del primer tercio del siglo XVII. Luce un bigote afilado y una perilla compacta y canosa.
The Landgrave is depicted in bust form, turned three-quarters to the right, gazing directly at the viewer. He wears a sumptuous cloak lined with fur or brocade, a buttoned doublet, and the characteristic openwork lace collar typical of the first third of the 17th century. He sports a sharp mustache and a thick, gray goatee.

Se trata de un grabado calcográfico (talla dulce / buril). La textura del fondo neutro se consigue mediante líneas horizontales paralelas muy finas, mientras que el modelado del rostro y las telas muestra un hábil uso de las tramas cruzadas para dar volumen y contrastes de claroscuro.
This is an intaglio print (engraving/burin). The neutral background texture is achieved through very fine parallel horizontal lines, while the modeling of the face and fabrics shows a skillful use of crosshatching to create volume and chiaroscuro contrasts.
ESCUELA / SCHOOL:
Corresponde plenamente al estilo de la escuela de grabadores franceses o flamencos activos en el primer tercio del siglo XVII. La elegancia tipográfica y el uso del poema en francés sugieren que la estampa estaba destinada a una obra publicada en Francia o en los Países Bajos (donde el francés era la lengua de la diplomacia y la alta cultura).
It fully corresponds to the style of the French or Flemish school of engravers active in the first third of the 17th century. The typographic elegance and the use of the poem in French suggest that the print was intended for a work published in France or the Low Countries (where French was the language of diplomacy and high culture).
