Christoph Peller holds a distinctive flower in his hand, which is directly linked to the moralizing and religious tone of the German verses at the bottom.
In the context of 17th-century Christian art and botany, floral symbolism often represented the transience of life (*vanitas*); here, however, it explicitly points toward spiritual devotion. The text indicates that his delight in the beauty of the flowers leads him to the "Passion of Christ" (*die Ihn zum Leiden Christi führt*), suggesting a meditation on Christ's suffering and redemption through nature.
Through the oval opening behind him, one can glimpse a garden loggia or a colonnaded courtyard featuring classical columns and vaulted arcades.
In portraiture of this era, formal gardens and architectural niches symbolized a cultivated society, order, strength of character, and either a well-managed estate or inner virtue.
At the top, framed by an elaborate cartouche of scrolls and volutes—characteristic of the *Auricular* or strapwork style common in Northern European Renaissance and Baroque engraving—appears the coat of arms of the Peller family.
This heraldic display immediately proclaims his lineage as a member of the prestigious Nuremberg patriciate, anchoring the portrait in civic identity and noble status.

AUTOR / AUTHOR :
Georg Strauch (1613–1675) was a German Baroque painter, miniaturist, draughtsman, and etcher based in Nuremberg.
He was well-known in Nuremberg for his portraiture and book illustrations. In this engraving, his role as inventor/draughtsman (pinxit et delin) meant he created the original life-portrait layout, which Jacob von Sandrart then translated into the copperplate engraving (sculpsit).
Jacob von Sandrart ( 1630–1708 ) was a prominent German Baroque copperplate engraver, cartographer, and art publisher. Born in Frankfurt am Main, he spent a significant part of his career working in Nuremberg, where he became a leading figure in printmaking and ran a prolific publishing workshop.
As the printmaker (sculpsit), Sandrart took Georg Strauch's original design or life-painting (ad vivum pinxit et delin) and expertly translated it into lines on a copper plate, allowing the portrait to be printed, distributed, and preserved as part of the visual record of Nuremberg's prominent figures.
