  • _________________________

  • This engraving depicts the beautiful title page or frontispiece of the celebrated 1617 edition of Ovid's Metamorphoses, translated into French verse by Raimond and Charles de Massac (father and son).
The design follows the typical structure of an early Baroque classical architectural title page, framing the main text within a niche or masonry monument flanked by alcoves.

  • Upper Pediment:

A semicircular arch crowns the composition, bearing the Latin inscription: "NON HAEC POMARIA MONSTRIS" (This orchard is not for monsters). It idyllically depicts the Garden of the Hesperides with fruit trees, a wounded dragon (Ladon), and a heroic figure (Heracles or Hercules) gathering the golden apples.
    Side Allegorical Figures:
On the right, a female personification (Envy or Discord) is depicted, crowned with serpents, devouring her own heart, alluding to the vices and human passions punished in Ovid's tales (as indicated by the inscription at her feet: "Supplicium suum est").
On the left is a winged male figure with animal ears (possibly a representation of the rustic deity Pan or of King Midas himself after the musical judgment, symbolizing ignorance or punishment, reinforced by the text below: «Iudicium suum est»).
