HORATII FLACCI. 18th century engraving

HORATII FLACCI

This magnificent illustration is the allegorical frontispiece designed for one of the prestigious 18th-century editions of the works of the classical poet Horace (Quintus Horatius Flaccus).

  • Flanco Derecho y Base (Las Musas y Venus):

The scene is structured as a rich classical allegory centred on the figure of the poet and the sources of his inspiration:

The Central Medallion:

It features a profile portrait of Horace, framed by the inscription Q. HORATIUS FLACCUS. The text below, Ex numismate aeneo Fulvii Ursini (“From the bronze coin of Fulvio Orsini”), refers to the archaeological source that served as the model for the portrait. Fulvio Orsini was a 16th-century humanist, antiquarian and archaeologist whose famous collection of coins and iconography of illustrious figures from Antiquity became the visual canon of reference for artists of the Baroque and Enlightenment periods.

Left Side (Lyrical Inspiration):

A male figure (embodying the god Apollo or the Genius of Lyric Poetry), crowned with ivy, points to the poet whilst holding a cup, symbolising poetic intoxication or creative enthusiasm.

. In the At his feet lies a leopard (or panther), an animal closely associated with the allegories of lyric and Dionysian poetry.

Right Side and Base (The Muses and Venus):

In the top right-hand corner, a female figure holds the classical lyre. In the lower right-hand corner, a rich allegory of beauty and love unfolds, featuring Venus holding the golden apple, accompanied by Cupid (Love) with his bow and a pair of doves—unmistakable attributes of the goddess that evoke the recurring themes of love and eroticism in Horace’s

This print corresponds to a very interesting and dense allegorical and mythological composition, whose spatial structure and stylistic complexity directly refer to the editorial illustrations of the 16th or 17th centuries, most likely conceived as a frontispiece or general opening engraving for an edition of Ovid's Metamorphoses or a similar mythological compendium.

Possibly combined with etching for the more fluid contour lines of the background. The density of the cross-hatching (taille-douce) used to create shadows and the volume of the drapery is characteristic of late Mannerism or the High Baroque of Central Europe or France
