Jean de Rokycana fue un teólogo Hussita Arzobispo de Praga entre 1435 y 1471, músico, filosofo y hombre de letras es considerado una de las figuras mas importantes de la iglésia de Bohemia del siglo XV.

Jean de Rokycana was a Hussite theologian, Archbishop of Prague between 1435 and 1471, musician, philosopher and man of letters and is considered one of the most important figures of the Bohemian church in the 15th century.

Fue una figura clave de la iglesia utraquista (husita moderada) en Bohemia. Elegido arzobispo de Praga por los estados en 1435, su cargo fue un punto álgido de la diplomacia eclesiástica; nunca fue reconocido formalmente por el Papado, lo que explica su complejo legado en la historiografía europea contemporánea y posterior.

He was a pivotal figure of the Utraquist (moderate Hussite) church in Bohemia. Elected Archbishop of Prague by the estates in 1435, his position was a flashpoint of ecclesiastical diplomacy; he was never formally recognized by the Papacy, which accounts for his complicated legacy in contemporary and subsequent European historiography.

Esta estampa es un interesantísimo grabado al aguafuerte y buril que representa el pasaje bíblico de la Curación de la suegra de Pedro

ICONOGRAFÍA

La escena capta un momento de gran dramatismo y recogimiento. Cristo aparece en el centro tomando la mano de la anciana enferma, la madre de la esposa de San Pedro, quien yace en el lecho con semblante debilitado pero expresivo. Alrededor de la cama se agrupan varios discípulos y testigos; destaca la figura de la derecha, presumiblemente el propio San Pedro, que observa con reverencia y preocupación el milagro. La técnica de De Frey emula a la perfección el uso de la luz típico del barroco holandés, concentrando el foco lumínico sobre el rostro de la enferma y la figura de Jesús, mientras el fondo se sumerge en unas densas y minuciosas tramas de sombras.

Existen ejemplares de este grabado específico de 1797 custodiados en instituciones de gran prestigio, como el Departamento de Artes Gráficas del Museo del Louvre (Colección Edmond de Rothschild), lo que subraya el valor histórico y artístico de la pieza.

This print is a fascinating etching and engraving depicting the biblical passage of the Healing of Peter’s Mother-in-Law

ICONOGRAPHY

The scene captures a moment of great drama and solemnity. Christ appears in the centre, taking the hand of the ailing elderly woman, the mother of Saint Peter’s wife, who lies on her bed looking frail yet expressive. Several disciples and witnesses are gathered around the bed; the figure on the right stands out, presumably St Peter himself, who observes the miracle with reverence and concern. De Frey’s technique perfectly emulates the use of light typical of the Dutch Baroque, focusing the light on the face of the sick woman and the figure of Jesus, whilst the background is immersed in dense and meticulous patterns of shadow.

There are copies of this particular engraving from 1797 held in highly prestigious institutions, such as the Department of Prints and Drawings at the Louvre Museum (Edmond de Rothschild Collection), which underscores the piece’s historical and artistic value.
