El conflicto central:
En el centro-izquierda, San Pablo se encuentra ante el sumo consejo. El sumo sacerdote (Ananías) acaba de ordenar a quienes están cerca de Pablo que lo golpeen en la boca. Vemos una figura con el brazo levantado justo detrás de Pablo, capturando el momento exacto del enfrentamiento físico.
El Sanedrín:
Los miembros del consejo están sentados en un banco semicircular escalonado (exedra), que imita la arquitectura romana clásica o teatral, gesticulando en un acalorado debate.
La intervención romana:
En el extremo izquierdo, un guardia romano fuertemente armado se encuentra junto a una columna monumental. Al fondo, se ven soldados romanos a caballo y a pie, listos para intervenir e impedir que Pablo sea despedazado por las facciones amotinadas de saduceos y fariseos.

The Central Conflict:
In the center-left, Saint Paul stands before the high council. The high priest (Ananias) has just ordered those standing near Paul to strike him on the mouth. We see a figure with an upraised arm directly behind Paul, capturing the exact moment of physical confrontation.
The Sanhedrin:
The council members are seated on a semicircular, tiered bench (exedra) mimicking classical Roman or theatrical architecture, gesturing in heated debate.
The Roman Intervention:
On the far left, a heavily armed Roman guard stands by a monumental column. In the background, Roman soldiers on horseback and foot are visible, ready to intervene to prevent Paul from being torn to pieces by the rioting factions of Sadducees and Pharisees.

JETONS DE L'ANNE 1709

Esta estampa muestra una serie de reversos de jetons (fichas metálicas o contadores) emitidos en Francia para el año 1709, durante el reinado de Luis XIV.

La hoja presenta un grabado calcográfico con once piezas circulares ordenadas cronológica o temáticamente (numeradas con números romanos del I al XI), las cuales conmemoran distintas instituciones, departamentos reales o eventos de ese año.


This print shows a series of reverses of jetons (metal tokens or counters) issued in France in 1709, during the reign of Louis XIV.
The sheet features an intaglio engraving of eleven circular pieces arranged chronologically or thematically (numbered with Roman numerals I to XI), which commemorate various institutions, royal departments, or events of that year.

Este tipo de láminas solían publicarse en gacetas oficiales de la época, como el célebre Mercure Galant (posteriormente Mercure de France), o en volúmenes dedicados a la numismática y la historia metálica del reinado de Luis XIV. Cada año, la Real Academia de las Inscripciones y Lenguas Antiguas diseñaba los motivos y divisas de los jetons que se acuñarían para los oficiales de la administración real como aguinaldo o herramientas de contabilidad, y estas estampas servían para difundir y registrar dichos diseños oficiales.

La pieza es un excelente testimonio de la propaganda política y la administración financiera del Estado francés en un año especialmente difícil, marcado por la Guerra de Sucesión Española y el terrible invierno de 1709 (Le Grand Hiver).


These types of prints were typically published in official gazettes of the time, such as the renowned Mercure Galant (later Mercure de France), or in volumes dedicated to numismatics and the metallic history of the reign of Louis XIV. Each year, the Royal Academy of Inscriptions and Ancient Languages ​​designed the motifs and emblems for the jetons (coins) that would be minted for royal administration officials as a Christmas bonus or accounting tool, and these prints served to disseminate and record these official designs.
The piece is an excellent example of the political propaganda and financial administration of the French state in a particularly difficult year, marked by the War of the Spanish Succession and the terrible winter of 1709 (Le Grand Hiver).
