ICONOGRAFÍA / ICONOGRAPHY:
______________________
Oval portrait:
This is the characteristic and preferred format for series of portraits of rulers, nobles, and military figures from the Central European Baroque period (closely linked to the Antwerp workshops and Flemish/German prints of the mid-17th century).
Attributes of Command:
Don Fernando is portrayed in half armor, with the military sash across his chest and holding the baton of command in his left hand, unmistakable symbols of his status as Captain General. He also wears the characteristic flat lace ruff (valona) fashionable in the 1630s and 1640s.
Battle Background:
Behind the effigy, to the right, a meticulously detailed scene of a cavalry charge and military combat can be seen. This iconographic allusion is very common in his portraits to commemorate his great victory at the Battle of Nördlingen (1634) or his campaigns in Flanders.
