Jakob Martini fue un destacado teólogo, filósofo y formidable polemista luterano alemán de la época posterior a la Reforma. Desempeñó un papel fundamental en el establecimiento de un marco luterano ortodoxo para la metafísica y la lógica neoscolásticas.
Nacido en Langenstein (cerca de Halberstadt), Martini era hijo de un pastor luterano. Se matriculó en la Universidad de Wittenberg en 1587 y posteriormente estudió en la Universidad de Helmstedt con el influyente metafísico aristotélico Cornelius Martini. Tras un breve período como pastor y rector en Norden, Frisia Oriental, su trayectoria académica quedó inextricablemente ligada a Wittenberg.
Jakob Martini (17 October 1570 – 30 May 1649) was a prominent German Lutheran theologian, philosopher, and formidable polemicist of the post-Reformation era. He played a foundational role in establishing an orthodox Lutheran framework for neo-scholastic metaphysics and logic.
Born in Langenstein (near Halberstadt), Martini was the son of a Lutheran pastor. He matriculated at the University of Wittenberg in 1587 and later studied at the University of Helmstedt under the influential Aristotelian metaphysician Cornelius Martini. After a brief period serving as a pastor and rector in Norden, East Frisia, his academic career became inextricably linked with Wittenberg.

The portrait presents Martini in his advanced years as a pillar of Lutheran orthodoxy at the University of Wittenberg. He is depicted half-length within an austere oval border, clad in a heavy academic/clerical gown (Schaube) with a stiff, wide collar typical of mid-17th-century German academic dress.
He holds a small volume tightly in his right hand, a direct visual attribute of his prolific scholarly production in metaphysics and polemical theology. His long, bifurcated beard and solemn gaze project patriarchal authority, aligning perfectly with the epigram’s praise, which structurally equates his intellectual faculties to a synthesis of Christian theology (St. Augustine) and classical philosophy (Aristotle)—the two pillars of Protestant scholasticism.
